CONSTITUTION CANDIDATE PLEDGES TO PROMOTE "APPRECIATION OF AMERICA" IN PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOLS

Playing off of a statement made by President Bush, the Constitution Party candidate for the Pennsylvania 36th Senate District is pledged to incorporate an "Appreciation of America" initiative in Pennsylvania schools.

"The whole idea is to re-introduce to our school children an appreciation for this country and the great men who created it," said Laurel Lynn T. Petolicchio. "My initiative would simply bring basic facts about American history out of the shadows and put them front and center in our schools."

Petolicchio's "Appreciation of America" initiative involves the posting of copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights as well as portraits of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and other Founding Fathers in every school in the state. Additionally, she would like to see copies of some of the great murals in the state capital posted, including 'The Camp of the American Army at Valley Forge' and 'Moses Carving the Ten Commandments.'

"Kids often find history boring and I think part of the reason for that is the fact that we as adults have failed to put the ideas and images of our Founding Fathers where kids can put a face to the names they hear in class," she said. "They need to be able to see the events that influenced the creation of our country and its laws. They need to be able to read for themselves the words these men believed in and were willing to die for."

Petolicchio believes that during this time of national conflict with forces that are bent upon the destruction of the United States, the President's comments were very apropos.

"In recent events our children have witnessed the great character of America, yet they also need to know the great cause of America," Bush said on Tuesday, September 17, which was Constitution Day.

"They are seeing Americans fight for our country. They also must know why our country is worth fighting for."

Petolicchio said that she agrees with the President that American children must be taught why their country is worth their love and devotion.

"Too often our school children are not taught the simple truths about our history and the struggles we went through to become an independent country," she said. "My initiative is one step that can be taken to help our children understand the value of their country and the importance of the liberty that America offers."

All donations to the Appreciation of America" initiative should be sent to “Friends of Petolicchio” at 1833 Habecker Road, Columbia PA 17512 and marked for the initiative.
